Face Shapes and Jewelry

Every woman should understand her face shape and the importance of working with that shape to make herself attractive. There is no particular face shape which is more attractive than the others, it is simply understanding yours and and knowing how to make yourself more attractive with jewelry (especially necklaces and earrings), and various pieces of attire.

There are basically 5 types of face shapes, and they are as follows: Oval/Oblong; Round; Square; Heart Shape; and Inverted Heart /Pear. Understanding the difference between these shapes will be very helpful in choosing the best jewelry pieces with amazing results in creating the look you desire. Let's take a quick look at each of these shapes and you will be able to determine which one best describes you.

Here's how to do it!

The simplest and easiest way is to pull your hair back with pins or a headband so all hair is completely off the face with the hair line showing. Then, stand about one foot away from a mirror and look directly into it. There are other ways, but this one should do it. Also, check your face when it is "at rest" and " smiling" to see if that makes a difference. Note: your face shape can change slightly over the years with changes in weight and health.

The Oval/Oblong face

The Oval shaped face is soft and curved with an equal distance between the hairline to the eyes and from the eyes to the chin and the Oblong face is just a little wider and fuller on the sides. This face shape can wear almost any necklace or jewelry style. The features within the face may be soft and curved or sharp and angular, but the overall face shape will be oval.

Necklaces: Almost any style or shape of necklace can be worn as long as the design is in proportion to the individual, whether petite or plus size. Necklaces should compliment the neckline worn as well as the other wearer's qualities. Chokers will make the face appear to be shorter while Princess and Matinee necklaces will tend to lengthen your face.

Earrings: Almost any shape or style of earrings can be worn by Oval faces if the design is in proportion to your face. Avoid styles that are too long as this will lengthen the face. Wear stud, drops, short dangles, teardrops, heart, earrings and etc.

The Round Face

The round face is also soft and curved with an equal distance all around. The nose is the facial point for this face shape (it is usually as wide as it is long). The features within the face can be sharp and angular or soft and curved, but the overall shape of the face will be round. The object for a round face is to lengthen its appearance.

Necklaces: Wear longer looping necklaces which draw the eyes down and lengthen the look of your face. Large pendants which create a "V" or draws attention below the neckline creates a powerful triangular point and longer line. Avoid choker and collar necklaces since they shorten the neck and add width to the throat.

Earrings: The round face is ideal for wearing long vertical styles, especially dangles, drops, narrow chandeliers, open chains and ear threads. Keep in mind that opposite shapes attract each other, therefore, choose triangles, rectangles, trapezoids, and other long vertically angular designs. Any style of earring which draws attention to its long vertical lines will be flattering to a round face.

The Square Face

A person with a square face has a strong jaw line. The distance from the top of the face to the chin is approximately the same as the width of your face. And, the width of the forehead, cheekbones, and chin are the same or almost the same. The features within your face can be soft and curved or sharp and angular but overall your face shape will be square. A square face can sometimes be mistaken for an oblong shape, but the length of the oblong face will become clear when you compare the two side by side. The objective for a square face is to soften the angles, making the forehead and jaw appear narrower and lengthening the face.

Necklines: Square faces need curves and vertical influences which will soften the jaw lines and make the face appear more oval. Use V-neck, deep Sabrina neckline, moderate cowl neck, scoop neckline and etc.

Necklaces: A square face need necklaces with length and curves to soften the strong jaw line. Matinee, Opera and Rope lengths are good especially if you have a short neck as these lengths will create a vertical line making your face appear longer. Use long oval pendants or focal's with curves and swirls to counter the angles of your square face shape. Avoid wearing collar, choker, and princess length necklaces as they will cause the neck to appear to be shorter and wider.

Earrings: Your square face is ideal for wearing large oval hoops, long drop or dangle earrings, and narrow chandeliers. Any style of earring which adds length to your face will create a flattering appearance for you. Avoid stud, post, button and short drop earrings,

The Heart Shaped Face

A heart-shaped face has a wide brow and a narrow chin. The width of the face at the forehead and cheekbones is greater the the width at the chin. The features within the face can be soft and curved or sharp and angular, but the overall shape will be like a heart. The top part of the face will usually be soft and curved with the chin coming to an angular point. The objective for this face shape is to re-balance the face making the forehead appear narrower and the jaw line appearing wider.

Necklaces: Heart-shaped faces need short necklaces to make the jaw line appear shorter and diminish the sharpness of the chin. Choker, collar, and Princess lengths are ideal, especially if you have a long neck. Other options are three strand chokers or chokers with large round pendants, circular neck wires and short bib-style necklaces will flatter your heart-shaped face.

Earrings: Use earrings which will widen the jaw line and chin such as medium hoops, teardrops, curved wires, triangles and other dangling space-filling designs. Avoid small stud, post, button, drops, and long narrowing earring styles.

The Pear Shape Face (Inverted Triangle)

The pear-shaped face has a narrow brow and a wide jaw line which is just the opposite of the heart-shaped face. The width of the face at the jaw line and cheek bones is greater that at the forehead. The features within the face can be soft and curved or sharp and angular, but the basic face shape will be like a pear. The objective for this face is to re-balance its shape creating the appearance of a wider forehead and a narrower jaw line.

Necklines: This face shape need curves to soften the strong jaw line and make the face appear more oval. Consider wearing a medium V-neck, collared open shirt, sweetheart neckline and etc. Avoid turtleneck and square necklines.

Necklaces: Pear-shaped faces need short necklaces with gentle curves to soften the jaw line. Princess and matinee are ideal because they place a gentle curve under the jaw line and lengthen the overall look of the face. Chain Necklaces with medium to large oval pendants will also accomplish the same effect.

Earrings: Your choice in earrings can be used to narrow the jaw line at the eye level and lengthen the facial appearance. Use small button, studs, and especially, long to medium long narrow dangles which will lie close to your face and create a longer oval shaped-face.
