Gold or Gold Filled ??
With 2009 behind us, I hope everyone is looking forward to
a great new year. This article will officially begin my program of writing
jewelry related articles helpful to my customers, subscribers and other
people who want a better understanding of the jewelry products which
they own and want to purchase. These articles will cover a variety of
subjects which will be both informative and educational. This one is
about the difference between "Gold" and "Gold Filled" Jewelry.
White Gold--Yellow Gold.
Pure Gold is yellow in color and two soft to be used in
making jewelry, so other metals musts be added to strengthen and harden
it. White Gold is created by making an alloy of Gold, Palladium, nickel,
zinc or silver. The percentage of each gold alloy determines it's "karat"
weight. 24K gold is 100% gold; 18K gold is 75% gold and 14K gold is
65% gold. These are the most common karat weights of gold used in making
jewelry. Therefore, when you purchase a piece of 14K gold jewelry, just
remember that it is 65% gold and 35% other metals which were listed
above. ( the amounts of each added metal can vary from different manufacturers)
The same process applies to Yellow Gold except different metals are
used to keep its nice yellow appearance.
Gold Filled Jewelry.
Gold filled jewelry is made using a different process
other than making an alloy of gold and other metals. It is composed
of a solid layer of gold bonded with heat and pressure to a base metal
such as brass. Some high quality gold-filled pieces have the look, luster,
and feel of 14 karat(65%) gold. By definition, the minimum layer of
karat gold in an item stamped GF must equal at least 1/20 the weight
of the total item. 1/20 12kt GF is the most common stamp you will find
on gold filled jewelry.
Under the normal wear and proper care which you will give to any
precious metal jewelry, 14KGF jewelry will not peel or flake and can
be a treasured as a heirloom piece. It is tarnish resistant like solid
14K gold and is safe for most people with sensitive skin who can wear
solid gold 14 karat gold jewelry. Caring for 14 Karat Gold Filled Jewelry
is as easy as caring for other precious metal jewelry. Therefore, 14K
gold jewelry is a long lasting, economical way to enjoy the luster of
gold without the expensive price tag.
I have written this article because of the many questions about the
Ring Guards which I sell in JDesigns store. The "School Ring Guards" (White & Yellow Gold)
and the "Regular Ring Guards" (White & Yellow Gold) are all "14K Gold Filled" jewelry pieces.
I appreciate
your business, and would enjoy hearing about your experience with my
products. Furthermore, letting your friends know about my great
products and service is the most sincere form of appreciation I can
expect! Thanks!
